| Shopping |
As with the majority of resorts on Corfu, St
George has several supermarkets plus a sprinkling of gold and silver
jewellers, summer clothes' boutiques, leather goods' shops and
gift shops.
Corfu town is the main year round shopping
centre, It has all the general outlets you would expect to find in
an urban centre, even a good old Marks & Spencer. There are some
excellent wine and spirit stores and many mouth watering
zaharoplastios, shops that specialise in cakes, pastries and sweets.
Specialities to look out for in Corfu include perishables, such as
olives, herbs, spices, nuts and cheeses such as the soft white feta,
made from goats and sheep milk. Virgin olive oil can be bought in
supermarkets as well as in delicatessens.
Gold
and silver shops have proliferated in Corfu in recent years
and offer quite good bargains. There are numerous shops selling
jewellery, leather goods and ceramics in St George aswell as in
Corfu Town.
Market - Monday-Sat
7-1.30
Corfu Town's lively morning market beneath the walls of the New Fortress, has a excellent
selection of fruit, vegtables and all types of edible olives. Fresh
fish is also sold and there are a few peripheral sellers of clothes
and souvenirs.

| Dining Out |
 |
St George has many tavernas to sample during
your stay, many are set along the beachfront and serve
wonderful food to accompany the wonderful views. The villa has its
own restaurant review book, which may help you decide which to
choose.
All of the restaurants are within walking distance of the villa
and all offer the traditional Greek dishes and of course lots
of fresh fish. Rick Stein visited Corfu and ate at many places
across the island, his choice for lobster was 'Boukari' about a
fifteen minute drive from the villa, well worth a visit.

| Sports and Activities |
Golf.....Corfu Golf Club is approx 45 minutes
from the villa. Described by 'Encyclopedia of Golf' as one of the
greatest courses in Europe it has an 18-hole course in pleasant
surroundings. The course was designed ny Donald Harradine and is
great for both scratch players and for those with a long
handicap.
Watersports....St George's
beach has its own watersports centre and
offer facilities from pedaloes and canoes to banana boats,
ringos, jet-ski trips and paragliding. You can also hire small
boats for half or full days out on the ocean. St George has two
windsurfing schools both located on Issos
Beach.
Cycling.......St George is
great for cycling as it is one of the few areas of Corfu that is
fairly flat. St George has several hire centres in and around the
resort offering a range of bikes for both adults and small
children.
Walking/Birdwatching.......Both
of these activities are very popular in the area of St George,
mainly due to the beautiful area surrounding Lake Korission.
Covering an expanse of 1500 acres, it is home to turtles
and lizards, aswell as numerous indigenous and migratory birds.
There are lots of walks around different trails and this is a
truly magical place where sea and sand harmonise.
|
| Life's a Beach! |
St George has not one, not two, but
three beaches on offer, a total of 6 miles of golden
sand, each beach has different aspects so take time to try them
all.
St George Beach...... is enormous
and extremely well maintained, the beach has yet again been
awarded the famous 'blue flag'. An award given to beaches that
excel in safety, water quaility, and enviromental awareness.
This beach has lots on offer and has a watersports centre at its
heart. Sunbeds and umbrellas are available for hire as the beach has
almost no natural shade. The beautiful blue sea has a
shallow waters edge so its great for little
ones.
Halikouna Beach.......The best
part of Halikouna beach is that it has soft sand dunes and is
perfectly safe for swimming. What's more, there are no hotels
or bars facing the sea which goes a long way in maintaining the
beauty of the beach. It is one beach which is comparatively less
crowded than its counterparts elsewhere on the island. The beach in
more ways than one acts like a protective cushion to the shimmering
Lake Korission. There is a small bridge made of wood that passes
through at the place where the lake empties into the sea. The beach
has taken every care for the physically challenged and there are
adequate provisions in the form of access points that are located at
strategic points along the beachfront with enough space to allow
passage of wheelchairs.
Issos
Beach.....Issos Beach is a mecca for windsurfers, the beach
is very organized with toilets, lifeguards, snack bar and changing
rooms. It also has been awarded the 'blue flag' for its
cleanness. There are two windsurfing schools on Issos Beach,
one owned by German windsurfers and one by English
windsurfers. Both schools rent all equipment as well as provide
training for all categories of surfers. |

| Day's Out |
 |
There are so many places to discover in Corfu we
have mentioned just a few here. We have provided several guide books
in the villa so take time to browse through them and make your own
choices. |
Aqualand........This is a great family day out.
Aqualand is Europe's 3rd largest waterpark with 75,000 square metres
of water slides, these include The Four Twisters, The Kamikazes and
The Black Hole. There is something for everyone here with
special areas set aside for the children which include The Big
Shallow Pool, The Slippery Octopus and The Pirates Adventure. There
are 'dry' activities to choose from aswell as restaurants, snack
kiosks and picnic areas.
Corfu Town........Corfu Town was built between
two fortresses during the Venetian rule and is one of the most
beautiful and impressive cities in Greece. The population of Corfu
Town is about 30,000 and it is quite cosmopolitan compared to other
islands in Greece. The town's architecture offers elegant buildings,
mansions, palaces and monuments in narrow paved streets with stone
steps. French designed squares full of trees and flowers, impressive
Venetian castles and even Byzantine churches. The narrow streets
house small shops and boutiques of every kind. Among the bustle look
out for the shops selling local items like wild honey, fig cakes and
handmade lace.
Boat Trips.......There are several boat trips
operated from St George, you can choose from a full or
half day trip, and each vary in its theme, from either a
relaxing day visting the beautiful sandy beaches dotted all
over the island. Some offer swimming in the coves around
Corfu and other trips take in the sights and offer shopping in the
local markets located further North. Prices vary and its best to
pre-book your place in the busier summer
months.

| Further Afield |

Paxoi (Paxos) lies 48km to the south of Corfu
Town and boat trips operate from St George, it is a popular
destination for day excursions from Corfu. It is a delightful place
and the pace of life is much slower than on Corfu. Dusty tracks wind
through olive groves to small settlements or to remote coves and
pebble beaches-Paxos is not a beach lovers paradise.
The south and west coasts of the island are
spectacular, with steep cliffs, huge cathedral-like sea caves and
wind-sculpted rock formations, such as the stupendous pinnacle of
Tripitos, linked by an arch to the south coast. The limestone of the
cliffs glow pink and ochre in the setting sun. A great day trip, it
is decidedly up-market, prices ten to be above average for the
Ionian as a whole, due in part to the high cost of
imports. |
